Egg-in-a-Hole

Egg-in-a-Hole

Are you ever tired of eating the same old scrambled eggs every morning for breakfast? Do you want something simple that will change up your regular breakfast routine while maintaining your protein intake? I don’t know about you, but I do!
Making an egg-in-a-hole is easy, tasty and can but fun!
To begin, your ingredients-
  • One slice of bread (of your choice, I prefer brioche or white for this specific dish)
  • One egg
  • Salt/pepper
  • Some optional additions include:
    • Hot sauce
    • Shredded cheese
To make your egg-in-a-hole simply-
  • Melt butter in a small frying pan over heat
  • Take your slice of bread and using a knife, carefully cut a circular hole in the center of that bread, and save the circle scrap piece
  • Place the bread in the pan and crack the egg in the hole you just cut out
  • Cover the pan with a lid and leave to cook (decide what kind of fried egg you prefer- over easy/medium/hard, and cook until your ideal yolk is ready)
  • Take the circle of bread you cut out previously and place it in a toaster or toaster oven until prepared to your likeness
  • Remove the egg-in-a-hole from the pan and serve with the circle toast!

How to cook a fried egg to the right yolk-
Egg yolks are a controversial food because some people love them runny and others detest them even a little soft. Personally, I cherish a good runny yolk and love to dip my toast in it, but in the case that you’re different, here are some tips on how to cook your fried egg to have the yolk you love!

Over Easy-
This style is easy to achieve and takes the least amount of time. After cracking your egg, watch as the whites cook on the bottom and when you can successfully get a spatula under the egg as a whole, flip it carefully and immediately turn off the burner. This gives the top side of the egg whites time to cook as the pan cools off but doesn’t expose it too much excess heat so as to keep the yolk runny.
  • in the case that you use a lid to cover your pan as the egg cooks, skip the step on flipping and just check as whites cook through from the steam build up from the trapped in heat. When they look all the way cooked, serve!
Over Medium-
An over medium egg is good for those of us who can’t choose. They don’t like the full on run of the yolk but also aren’t satisfied with one that’s been cooked all the way through. In order to make this egg simply follow the same basic process as the over easy egg except, after flipping the egg over, leave the heat on and allow it cook some more on that side. This will both finishing cooking the whites on top as well as begin to cook the yolk, leaving the center still runny and wet.

Over Hard-
An over hard egg is not hard to achieve. It takes the most time to cook but is not significantly longer than the other two ways. Simply watch your egg as your yolk cooks. When the color turns from an orange to more of a yellow color and the consistency hardens, you know you’ve done it right!
  • as a cheat, if you want to ensure your yolk is always cooked through, poke a hole in the yolk after you crack the egg in the pan. The yolk will spill over and cook with the whites!

An egg-in-a-hole is easy to pair with other breakfast items as well. You may eat it as a meal in itself, but in the case that you don’t find it enough to fill you up, add a side of bacon or a cup of fruit to eat with it!

As well, I like to top my egg with shredded cheese and hot sauce right when it comes off the pan so that the cheese melts!
